The Google rep couldn't explained how/why that happened, but I got it to work. I held the BACK and HOME button as instructed, and the Chromecast device found the remote. I then restarted the Chromecast device, and pressed the sync button again. While the method I found from Google didn't help with that (holding just the home button while replacing the batteries), I was able to do it by placing the remote face down (pressing ALL buttons) while replacing the batteries. If there are batteries in the remote, that LED is on and it doesn’t work. I tried resyncing the remote by hitting the button on the Chromecast device (with the batteries removed). I tried putting new batteries in the remote. As soon as that second battery goes in the remote, that light turns on and stays on. I tried removing the batteries from the remote for a brief period and putting them back in. After a 5 minute long news video, the remote stopped working 100%.
